About Our Library

The Newport City Elementary School Library is open to all our students, staff, and family members from 8-4 weekdays.  Classes visit once a week for stories, "book talks", and information skills lessons.  Books are signed out for two weeks but can always be renewed.

Our collection of 11,000+ materials includes books, magazines, and audio-visual items for parents and teachers as well as for the children.  Our library catalog, Destiny, includes recommended web sites on many subjects.  You can use Destiny on your home computer, too:  http://destiny.newportcityelementary.org.  Ask your student to help you get started or stop by the library if you have questions.

Read Around America!   Books are your ticket for the tour!

We'll be learning more about America this year as we take a virtual road trip across this diverse and wondrous country of ours.  As we log in silent reading minutes in the library we'll mark our way around the perimeter of the U.S., from the furthest east to the furthest west, southwest, southeast, and home to Newport.  We'll also be examining American art posters, thanks to a grant from the National Endowment of the Humanities "Picturing America" program.

Scholastic Book Fair.  Our annual book fair is right around the corner!  Students will preview the fair during their library classes, starting the week of September 20th.  Our Parent Preview  is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 23 from 3-5 p.m., and our Family Night at Open House runs from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24  There will be books and merchandise available for sale and a raffle for posters.  Proceeds from the Book Fair benefit the school and classroom libraries and have contributed in the past to author visits, new technology, and playground improvements.  Thank you in advance for this financial support, as well as the way you promote your child's reading!    We are looking forward to seeing you at this fun annual event!
